Both the Hindustan Times and the Times of India carried this news on the front page.  Why?

Because it is shocking --  shocking to know that in India every seven minutes a woman dies from complications related to pregnancy and childbirth.  How many women exactly?  78,000!

This and other data in the UNICEF's State of the World's Children report 2009 shows just how far India still has to go to provide good healthcare for women and children.

Some other facts in the report:

The number of children who didn't live till the age of 5 (in 2007):  1963000 or a rate of 72 per 1000 births.  While this number is huge, it is actually a massive improvement since 1999 when the under 5 mortality rate was 117 per 1000.

28% of all babies born in India are below their optimal birthweight.

Do take a look at the full report.  It's an eye opener.
